HOW TO ORGANIZE A SMALL YARD – PRACTICAL TIPS FROM A DESIGNER

A small yard doesn’t necessarily mean limited opportunities. A properly planned space can be the perfect place for relaxation, comfort, and ‘closeness to yourself’, regardless of its size.

In today’s blog, we’ll share practical tips from a designer on how to organize a small yard to maximally utilize each square meter.

Determine the Purpose of the Yard

The first and most important step in planning is defining the purpose: how functional should this space be:

  • Do you need a space to relax?

  • A place for family gatherings?

  • Children’s entertainment place?

  • Or simply a green, decorative area?

For a small yard, it’s recommended to select 1-2 primary functions to avoid overloading the space.

Zoning – Big Secret of a Small Yard

Zoning helps the yard appear organized and visually more spacious, and also significantly increases its functionality.

Zones can be separated by:

  • Various materials used for finishing the ground cover

  • Plant placement

  • The use of lighting

Vertical landscaping – a way to expand space

Greenery in a yard is essential, regardless of the size of the area. If space is limited, we can use height:

  • Plants placed on a wall

  • Vertical pots

  • Green panels

Vertical landscaping is not only cost-effective but also gives the yard a modern and vibrant look. Vertical landscaping is used not only to design small yards but is also a popular solution for balconies, terraces, and larger yards.

Colors and Materials

The most important detail in organizing any space is the correct choice of colors. Colors can visually enlarge or reduce a space. When finishing a small yard, it is important to choose the right colors and materials. In this case, we recommend using:

  • Light and neutral tones (white, beige, light gray)

  • Natural materials – wood, stone, concrete

  • Minimalistic textures

Take note that dark colors and heavy elements visually reduce the space and create a feeling of overloading.

Compact and smart furniture

Choose furniture that:

  • is foldable or multifunctional

  • does not occupy too much space

  • preferably furniture with a built-in niche, which will save you space and also be useful for storing unnecessary items

Keep in mind that the following principle applies in the field of design: less items – more comfort.

Lighting is one of the key elements

Lighting is one of the most important details for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Properly selected lighting adds a special charm to evenings spent in a small yard. Use lighting not only to have light but also to create a cozy and pleasant environment:

  • Warm LED lights

  • Wall lighting

  • Lighting built into the ground and between plants

Plants

What’s a yard without landscaping and plants worth? However, when it comes to a small space, it’s important not to overload it with a variety of greenery to avoid creating a chaotic effect. The best solution for a small yard:

  • Small plants

  • A combination of different heights

  • 1–2 accentual plants

It’s important that plants don’t intersect with paths or other spaces. The yard should allow for free movement and navigation. All areas of the yard should be accessible, allowing for regular cleaning and maintenance.

A small yard can be transformed into a full-fledged recreational area if planned thoughtfully.

Proper zoning, minimalist design, and functional solutions transform a small space into great opportunities.

Designer’s tip: Plan your yard so it serves your daily life, not just bears a decorative feature.

In our project, m² at Mtatsminda Park, we offer the residents homes with courtyards and terraces of various sizes — for greater comfort, more space, distancing from the noise, and being close to yourself.

m² at Mtatsminda Park is being built in Okrokana, adjacent to Mtatsminda Park, and includes six five-story buildings with varying designs. This will be a special place for ‘living your life,’ where all the conditions for a healthy lifestyle, peace, and harmony with yourself are created.
